Watch Heathrow ATC time lapses with me!
Hey everyone! On Saturday 16th of January 2021 we had a big VATSIM event, pairing up Heathrow and Frankfurt airports for an evening. I was able to do some controlling, and streamed my first session on Heathrow Final Director (FIN - link below!). I made a few time lapses from the event and we can watch them together here!

Struggling for Control (ATC)
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.3 года назад
First aired on 15th February 1988, this Horizon documentary looks at the growth of the UK's Air Traffic Control network, and the problems that this created in terms of airspace congestion and the increased likelihood of air-misses. The program discusses the limited aerial capacity of UK airspace, the limits of the technology of the time (the ageing IBM 9020) and the introduction of new technolo...

I don't know why this was recommended to me 3 years later but it was fun to watch!
Nerves of steel total focus and dedication. Respect!
aw, thumbnail was misleading… I thought you were using a desktop monitor as a desktop!
BRILLIANT WORK to all those involved. cheers for showing us.
Wait, you sound familiar... Have you seen a callsign ending with 231?(if so that was me) Also, amazing job with this.
Pluto instead of Papa ? why ?
Very interesting
Incredible, thank you for preserving and uploading this. This is fantastic really awesome footage and a look behind the scenes during a really awesome and somewhat turbulent time in aviation. Also I saw you don't upload videos anymore do you still control on vatsim, are you doing ok?
Thanks for the comment! All good - just not enough time to dedicate to Vatsim these days unfortunately. Hopefully more flying content to come in the future 🙂
I really want to become an ATC. Where and how do I start?
I can't do well two things at the same time so imagine how would my VATSIM experience end? 😂
Would love to see more videos especially EGLL int/fin streams. 🔥🔥
No sound
It’s working for me!
Fascinating
What a TERRIBLE map. Bravo is not clearly marked. In fact I cannot even see a single mark designating bravo. Do you have to guess? How can you possibly work with such a primitive, inadequate map? Is VATsim living in the early 20th Century? Little Navmap's airfield views are a HUNDRED times more clear than this map that looks like it was painted by a not very talented 9 year old - badly. Where is Bravo actually marked? If this is really how Heathrow is portrayed on real ATC screens I can't believe there wouldn't be collisions each day!
Your an air traffic controller?
Why do all the Sim'ers always use Speedbird or Virgin callsigns? Why not ANA, Quantas, Cactus, ABD666 or "Ed-Force One" (LOL), Shamrock, SleazyJet ;) ;) ;) LOL
Absolutely loved this, thanks.
good video. I have just started my IR/R, three lessons in. out of interest, what was the duration of the test?
If I remember correctly, it was about an hour.
Can you explain what programs you're using to see ground control?
This is using Euroscope :-)
You would not think watching a radar screen for a flight sim would keep your attention (even with an entertaining Host!), but it does. Hooked.
A piece of history nicely documented here. Sad to see the old tower go. Btw, who is the FISO in this clip (about 2 mins in)?: ruclips.net/video/LWqP4mxZMQk/видео.html
omg you def were there for my first flight on vatsim. I was doing EGLL - EGBB on a cessna 172. C/S N10274. Thanks so much for all your help. I was nervous af and messed up my taxi route. You showed patience and professionalism. Thanks again.
If _one_ more thing starts pulling for my attention besides the single thing I'm currently working on I get stressed! Bravo to the men and women who do this day in and day out. Thank you!
Amazing to see Heathrow before all the development
no full auto?
How’s the new tower?
Very different to the old one!
Wow, just recently discovered these videos. Not sure if you read comments on old videos but how on earth do you know what vectors to send people on when? I can’t for the life of me work it out from your screen lol
It's mostly practice! A lot of people on VATSIM use a vector tool, but I find it much quicker just to eyeball it 🙂
What happened to your videos?
Really need to learn this one day I feel this wld be a great to do may I ask what do your cheat sheets consist of
They're the sheets available from the VATSIM community :-)
am 5hrs into ir(r). did u pass?
I did!
Oddly satisfying watching these!
I’m thinking of starting my training to be a VATSIM controller after using VATSIM as a simmer for nearly a year now - you provide some very help helpful insights into a few key areas 👍
50:12 Readback was incorrect
Do us a video of the new tower soon!
Over and out. Do you get to take to old tower home? LOL
Vintage ! Good luck !

I helped build Swanick control center. Great project.
Harder to get accepted into Air Traffic Control, than getting into Oxford or Cambridge. Less than ½% acceptance rate!
Imagine if road vehicles and traffic lights were controlled like this.
Have enjoyed watching your video! Great to learn as early stage flight simmer with vatsim. thanks!
Really great video - I', studying IR(R) now ad didn't know what to expect - looks easier than the PPL.
You can't clear for take off aircraft
I created a vatsim account but it asking for a cid what do I put there
How do I start vatsim i been on there website but it’s so confusing
would it be possible to also log into vatsim as a spectator and simulate the tower window like that?
I believe so, you can log in as an Observer (OBS) and configure Euroscope however you like!
Every once in a while I come back to this video. It always makes me smile
No doubt the UK is the toughest because with such heavy concentrations they can't afford an accident. As we have seen in other post accident investigations perhaps a word or phrase that could be misinterpreted can have consequences. Here in the US, as I understand it, there can be various levels of complexity and someone who can't work out in a high volume sector might still make a useful contribution in a less demanding position. Crew not very proficient in English around the world or subtle social pressures in a cockpit can prevent real understanding of what has been said or thought to have been said.
